Joe Henderson

orn in Lima, Ohio, saxophonist Joe Henderson moved to New York in 1962 after studying in Detroit and serving in the army.  He recorded with Kenny Dorham in 1962-63, worked with Horace Silver in 1964-66, co-led the Jazz Communicators with Freddie Hubbard in 1967-68 and joined the Herbie Hancock Sextet during 1969-70.

In the mid '70s he moved to California and began teaching music.

Influenced by John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman, he was acknowledged as a master of the tenor saxophone having developed a style based on melody and thematic development together with a few abstract surprises.
